Hi all, my name is Alex De La Campa. I am 27 years old and I am now a retired veteran of the United States Navy. I spent 4 years in Naval special warfare and in 2012 while on active duty I was involved in an accident that resulted not only in the loss of physical but mental and cognitive capabilities. A severe injury to my inner ear and a TBI (traumatic brain injury) left me with little to do but spend a painfully slow 14 month recovery with things like: relearning how to walk in straight lines, closing my eyes without losing proprioception, bed ridden with migraines and neurological impairments. I wasn’t prepared for my time in the military to end so abruptly, I loved my job so when it was time for me to move on I had nothing really to move on to. This transition brought with it it’s own set of unique challenges and up until that point I had always defined myself on my ability to not only meet a challenge but dominate the opportunity to overcome an obstacle. These challenges were different–they are different— and I fight them every day, they continue to challenge me when I least expect it and am most unprepared. I spent a lot of time wringing bottles of Jameson dry and asking myself if I was worth the effort. I’m currently a sociology Major set to graduate in 2016, this is something I didn’t plan on doing before I joined and something I didn’t think I would be able to do after my injury. I am back in the gym and am luckily under the advisement of Dr. Theresa Larson, I have a redefined view on fitness, health and the amazingly resilient structure that is the human body.

What I have come to understand about myself and my one trait that I used to admire, but that I had seemed to loose after my injury and the one I had always defined myself by: My mental fortitude, I found that ability for perseverance and self talk, has actually been the one trait that has gotten me through. So its nice to know I still got the goods. I am still a sucker for being able to fly.

Our knees are the biggest joints in our bodies, and they are super important because they provide stability. Knee pain and injuries are usually a result of bad habits associated with foot, ankle and hip movement. In this episode, we cover knee problem symptoms such as sciatica, knee clicking, behind the knee pain, knee overextension, and more.

“You can never go wrong with building more stability or balance in the joints.” — Dr. Theresa Larson

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Don’t sit for too long — When you sit down, you’re not activating your glutes, which results in weak glutes, which leads to bad mechanics. Squeezing your glutes while sitting is possible, but it’s not comfortable or intuitive, and strong glutes are important for good movement mechanics. If your day consists of a lot of sitting time, make sure you’re stand up often and go on walks.

You need good form even when you are walking — Walking with your feet turned out (a.k.a. duck footing), causes bad hip and knee positions and movement. Even worse, running with bad form, such as heel striking, causes even harsher damage on the body.

Don’t wear cushy shoes — Shoes with thick, cushy soles are not good for your health. Ideally, wear minimal, flat shoes, so you can use your foot and leg muscles correctly.

Don’t wear heels too often — If you are a woman who wears heels often, (for example: to work), make sure you are switching to flat often. Spending a lot of time in heels, causes unwanted toe dominance and bad ankle flexion mobility, which means you won’t be able to squat well.

Slow down your training — Have you ever done a 90 second squat? Yup, 90 seconds. Slow down your training to focus on stability, that will help with your longevity.

“The gym doesn’t need to be this place where we go kick our own ass, every single day, as hard as we possibly can. We can create this balance in our life, where some days we slow down a little bit, some days we are going to lift and try to PR.” — Anders Varner

Following your calling and defining your “why” are the building blocks of a successful and fulfilling life. It’s something you hear us champion frequently on Barbell Business, Barbell Shrugged and Barbell Buddha. But what do you do when your calling and your “why” don’t exactly match up?

Dr. Theresa Larson, founder of Movement Rx, has the answer to this question. Frustrated with a traditional clinic setting, she didn’t want to deal with the BS of the regular physical therapy world – treating 20 patients a day in the insurance business which felt broken and very restricting. After confiding in Kelly Starrett, the idea of breaking free from the regular constraints of the physical therapy world seemed much more doable.

In this week’s episode, you’ll hear more about how Dr. Larson fought through a debilitating eating disorder, the passing of her mother, leading an entire Marine platoon while deployed in Iraq, and embraced her calling to heal and nurture to craft her own successful career in the fitness industry.

We drop into MovementRX this week to talk all things mobility with Theresa Larson and Anders Varner.

We dive into lower back pain and how you can identify and fix the source of the pain in the body. Fact: 8 out of 10 humans (both athletes and couch potatoes alike) have some sort of lower back pain, and most of the time the pain is caused by some sort of imbalance or weakness somewhere else in the body.

Theresa and Anders bring to light some “oh shit” points on how our daily habits can be the cause of our pain. They also debunk some assumptions around mobility, and physical therapy.

This podcast was a really special experience for me. It was the first time my husband Per Larson has joined me on a podcast. The focus of this podcast was on the transitioning veteran. This “transition” can be all over the place for service members because you no longer have your tribe. The tribe you spent years with, deployed with, went through many highs and lows with is now very different. The transition period can be filled with a lot of questioning yourself, sadness, happiness, and overall working to figure our what is next, then actually following through with your decision.

My husband Per before we were married was with me during the final phases of my transition. While I was prepping to go to graduate school, I met Per. We were in two completely different phases of our life, and our professional career, however our relationship was easy. I am incredibly thankful for him in my life. His patience, unconditional love, and ability to meet where I am at is one of the most amazing gifts that came out of my “transitioning” time from the Marine Corps.

When you listen to this podcast that my friend Keith Galloway and his wife Laura run, you will hear what my transition from being a Marine Corps officer to a civilian was really like. It was not easy by any means, however, it did get me where I am today. I have a beautiful family, a business that is growing, and people around me with a similar vision. While this did not happen over- night, and there were years of education that needed to happen, years of shedding unneeded relationships, years of trying, failing, trying again, I landed where I am today.

This story is about me becoming healthy, and about my life long journey of keeping myself healthy, my family, and those around me.

Not only is it helping people have access to health in their own home, but it is healthy for Dr. T as well.”

Stoked to be a guest on the Wodigy Podcast run by Ryan Davis who is a Doctor of Chiropractic. Being part of the CrossFit community and the Strength and Conditioning world, all the health professionals who live it, breath it, do it, all find each other somehow. Ryan and I connected via LinkedIN and here it is. We talked about going online with programming, coaching, influencing and what that jump has been like for me. I was able to share how my vision for my practice has pivoted due to truly understanding more in depth my values and how those play out in my life especially with a growing family.

Health professional to health professional we had the heart to heart about running a practice and how to do other fun and innovative things with the knowledge we have. For one, how many people do you want to help? While I like one on one, I want to influence and help heal MILLIONS. I can only do this by going online, speaking, and sharing the gift of movement education in person as well as shared over the internets.

Hence the birth of our low back fix program which includes low back pain exercises, low back strengthening programming, and breathing more effectively with your diaphragm. The program involves a little bit of rehab with a lot of functional movement. With Ryan I was able to explain the why behind this program, and how we plan for it to influence the masses knowing that 8 in 10 adults will experience low back pain in their lifetime.

I am thankful for other health professionals like Ryan Davis who are out there working to make a difference.
